Why Choose Montessori

Learning through physical experiences

Children at Little Mouse Montessori learn by working with specifically designed equipment in the classroom. This means that every piece of equipment is concrete rather than abstract. For example; rather than just learning math sums off by heart the materials we use help the child to physically add objects together. Maria Montessori believed that children need to move and learn through experiences rather than just sitting and listening to a teacher.

Mixed age classroom

Little Mouse Montessori has a classroom of mixed ages and mixed skill levels. This is to encourage peer learning as the younger children learn from their older friends and this also helps the older children solidify their knowledge they learn and therefore they gain leadership skills too.

Uninterrupted work cycles.

At Little Mouse Montessori we have long work cycles where the children work on any activity (and therefore any subject area) for however long is needed for them to grasp that concept. By having long uninterrupted work cycles the child can deeply engage with the materials of an activity and therefore can reach intense concentration.

Life skills academics.

Not only does Little Mouse Montessori focus on math, language, and cultural studies, but we also include practical life and sensorial activities. Practical life consists of exercises to help the child learn skills used in their everyday life e.g. pouring water, sweeping, opening and closing boxes, tying shoe laces etc. Sensorial activities consists of anything to do with the child’s senses. These are auditory - hearing, olfactory - smelling, visual discrimination - seeing, gustatory - tasting, tactile - touch through textures, chromatic - colours, stereognostic - touch with muscle memory, baric - weights and thermal - temperature.

Individualised learning.

Rather than giving group lessons, we at Little Mouse Montessori give the child a one-on-one lesson depending on their specific level, interest, and needs. This is possible because the children largely work independently by practising and perfecting an activity, they already had a lesson on. We as teachers track and monitor each child’s progress and support them through the curriculum. This also satisfies the child's need for repetition and perfection.

Educating the whole child.

We at Little Mouse Montessori focus on nurturing each child’s potential by providing learning experiences that support their physical, emotional, intellectual, social and language development. By developing the child in every way of the 5 development areas, the child is educated as a whole.

The absorbent mind.

Maria Montessori determined that the first 6 years of a child’s life are the most crucial in child development. Their minds are described to be that of a sponge-like capacity absorbing any and all information within and from their environment. During this time the child rapidly develops an understanding of their culture, and their world, and constructs the foundations of their intelligence and personality. Little Mouse Montessori provides the environment for the child to learn during this crucial stage of development.

Independence.

At Little Mouse Montessori our classroom environment and materials provide the children with the ability to learn and think for themselves. Each activity has a control of error built into it, meaning that the child can see if they are correct or incorrect by themselves. This helps the child become more independent.

Prepared environment.

The Montessori classroom is also known as the prepared environment. This means that everything in our classroom has a purpose and a place. There is a distinct order and logical processes in the classroom helping the child satisfy their need for order. Our classroom is designed with everything the child needs to explore and learn independently. In the prepared environment the shelves are prepared with activities that relate to the interests of the children.
